NO DRAGONS WERE SLAIN (Myths and Legends Series) Part Five
Dragons weren’t fearsome,
They were gentle and kind.
Keepers of knowledge,
That enlightened the mind.
They could pass through the realms,
Of both shadow and light.
For they possessed ancient wisdom,
And the gift of third sight.
Kingdoms could not tame them,
Though they sought the upper hand.
But our dragons loved their freedom,
And would not bend to our command.
It wasn’t flame they feared the most,
Nor the talons dragons grew.
What frightened every kingdom,
Was how much the dragons knew.
They carried truths throughout the ages,
Every secret crowns concealed.
No king could buy their silence,
For fear the truth would be revealed.
So the kings made their decision,
The people’s minds now full of lies.
They made a proclamation,
That every dragon dies.
The kings’ determination,
Filled their lands with dread.
A bounty placed upon the dragons,
For every severed head.
They could have scorched the kingdoms,
And set the lands aflame.
But harming those who’d done no wrong,
Would make them just the same.
So rather than seek vengeance,
They chose to disappear.
Retreating to the hidden realms,
Beyond the reach of fear.
The young were sent through shadow,
To worlds beyond our sight.
While ancient dragons stayed behind,
To keep the truth alight.
On horseback and in armor,
The knights rode all night long.
To rid the land of dragons,
Their kings claimed had done them wrong.
The dawn was barely breaking,
When the knights and dragons met.
Their swords were drawn and ready,
But no threat had risen yet.
The dragons stood in silence,
No fire upon their breath.
For they foresaw no battle,
And they knew there’d be no death.
One knight stepped slowly forward,
His sword held firm and high.
But something made him hesitate,
When he met the dragon’s eye.
He searched its ancient features,
For evil he could see.
Instead he found a gentle soul,
Who wished to remain free.
He lowered down his weapon,
Then others did the same.
For none could find the monsters,
Their kings had learned to blame.
The eldest dragon dipped its head,
No longer facing steel.
For sometimes truth needs not be told,
When hearts can sense what’s real.
So history changed the ending,
And the truth was locked away.
The knights became great dragon-slayers,
In the tales we tell today.
Yet somewhere beyond shadow,
Where mortal eyes can’t see,
The dragons guard their knowledge still…
Alive, untouched, and free.
